Dr. Chris Golde is a career coach working with PhD students and postdoctoral scholars at Stanford Career Education, the career center at Stanford University. She is on a team of coaches working with PhD students and postdoctoral scholars, from all departments of the University. For over 25 years she has worked in a variety of roles in graduate education, as a student, faculty member, administrator, advocate, researcher, and scholar. She also co-principal investigator on the AAU PhD Education Initiative; the mission of which is to promote more student-centered doctoral education at AAU universities by making diverse PhD career pathways visible, valued, and viable.

Dr. Chris Hartgerink is a meta-researcher with a broad interest in how the systems we operate in affect the decisions we are able to make, shifting the balance of responsibility from the individual to the system they’re in. In 2020, he defended his PhD thesis entitled “Contributions towards understanding and building sustainable science” from Tilburg University. Integrating meta-research, sociology, and economics, he’s now building an organization, Liberate Science, an organization that aims to liberate (research) workers by bringing democracy and equality to academia.
Cosmin Gafta is a 21-year-old, self-describing as “all-out web3 fanatic, halfway between blockchain and music.” Cosmin is the founder of Puppeteers, an upcoming creative project aiming to create the first virtual music artist to be featured in the Billboard top 100. He is also a core team member at W3b Lab Community, building towards becoming a Layer 1 web3 event organization (functioning as a Decentralized Autonomous Organization).

Sometimes less is more… How to network as a job hunter?
There are two main types of networking. Namely, you can either network horizontally or vertically. Horizontal networking means increasing the width of your network by gaining several (casual) professional contacts. These are often people whom you only met once. They recognize your name and expertise, yet, you haven’t gone through any projects together and so they don’t know how it feels to work with you in practice.

Christopher Madan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Nottingham in the UK. He has a broad range of research interests, but primarily studies memory, aging, and brain imaging. He completed his PhD at the University of Alberta (Canada) in 2014, which included a one-year visiting scientist position at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Boston College (USA) for three years. Chris uses a combination of cognitive psychology, neuroimaging, and computational modeling methods in his research. He also has done work related to open science, mentorship, and implementing learning science strategies in other fields.
Caolan Kovach-Orr, PhD, earned his PhD in theoretical biology from McGill in 2015. His research was focused on predator-prey interactions. Today, he is an Experienced Director Level data scientist who excels at hiring great people. Currently focused on Machine Learning for Insurance Pricing, solving novel problems, and product creation/development.
